Some Games and Some Dullcote

I’ve been pretty busy, hobby-wise, since my last update. I’ve done the trifecta: I’ve built models, I’ve painted (the last step of painting is sealing with Dullcote, so it counts), and I’ve played some games. Let’s get chronological:

Uncle Tickles, the Chaos Rhino, and Ol’ Drippy make the worst boy band ever

There was a very pleasant day recently with almost no wind and low humidity, so it struck me that I should probably be sealing some models. I generally use Testor’s Dullcote, which is frequently hard to find here in town. The two places that carry it (Hobby Town and Hobby Lobby) are usually out of stock. I would think they would order more so they can actually make some damn sales, but what do I know? Therefore, when I can actually find it, I tend to buy it so I have it when I need it. Luckily, I had some when this lovely day came along, so I was able to seal and finish Uncle Tickles, my Chaos Rhino, and Ol’ Drippy. Drippy actually isn’t completely finished, as he needs a little bit of gloss varnish on his drippy parts, to make them look wet, but he’ll be done soon. I’ll have to take some real nice GlamourShots of them when I get my photo rig set back up again.

I recently played a big 2000-point game against Kevin down in the Nerd Bunker. I used nearly every Black Templar model I had, and Kevin brought a combination of Deathwing Terminators, Ravenwing Bikers, and an ally force of Imperial Guard consisting of some I.G. guys and two Vendetta flying gunships of death. All in all, my bad dice and his superior list contributed to me getting thoroughly destroyed, although at least I wasn’t tabled. There isn’t much more to say about that, but I do have some better ideas for strategy next time. Hopefully this trouncing will cause me to remember these new lessons when the time comes.

Then, this past Saturday, Ben and Josh (and later Tom) came over and we played some games. It was Josh’s first games of 6th edition, so we started with a game of Josh and I (running 500 points each of Imperial Fists and Black Templar, respectively) against Ben and 1000 points of his mean, hurtful Necrons. As you might be able to tell from my subtle and masterful foreshadowing, we didn’t win that game. Honestly, we didn’t win the hell out of that game. Then we ate some lovely chili and chatted about nerd topics for quite awhile. Afterwards, we decided to switch it up a bit, and then Ben and Josh brought 500 points each of Necrons and Tau (respectively) against my 1000 points of Black Templar. Again, the Necrons won that game as well (I harmed way more of Josh’s Tau than I did Ben’s Necrons) and then we all (including my wife) went to eat burgers and prime rib. Other than the Necrons, it was a pretty good day.

Lastly, as of the last few days, I’ve been working on the Chaos forces in the new 6th edition Warhammer 40,000 “starter box”, Dark Vengeance. At this point, I’ve built six Chosen and seven Cultists, and I still have a Chaos Lord, a Hell Brute and 13 more Cultists to build. Then, I have an entire second set of Dark Vengeance to build, as my friend Karl and I each bought one and I’m trading him my Dark Angels from the box and he’s trading me his Chaos Space Marines from his box. It’s a pretty good deal, if you ask me. I’ll post about them when I get the first set built.

Versus Imperial Guard

I’ve been pretty busy the last few weeks, both at work and in my hobbies. Luckily, I’ve gotten some games in, but I’m afraid my blogging has suffered a bit. Hopefully I can try to fix that to some degree here.

A few Saturdays ago, my friend Karl came over and brought a “fluffy” 1750-point Imperial Guard list with him, filled with special characters. I have a terrible memory and didn’t take any decent notes, so I can assure you that this will not be a proper batrep (battle report). However, I did take photos, so I can try to use them to give you some vague idea of how the game went.

It was a two-objective game (one in each deployment zone) and the deployment type was standard (12-inches out from the long edges of the 4×6-foot table), I believe. We both set up our figures and left some stuff in reserve. I left my Daemon Prince and my trio of Chaos Terminators in reserve (as usual) and Karl left most of his stuff in reserve, only starting with a Leman Russ, a Chimera and a Manticore on the table to start. This made me a bit nervous because I knew that he was still going to be bringing a lot of figures into the game at some point, but I wasn’t sure from where, so I had to be careful. I moved up pretty cautiously (except for my Oblilerators, which I wanted to get into cover ASAP and use as a long range firing platform) and the game progressed.

The Imperial Guard have all kinds of airplanes and whatnot, besides all of the tanks. Valkyries and Vendettas and stuff like that. The can come on, hover around like a helicopter, drop guys off, shoot the place up and generally cause me problems. Karl had two of them, but the first one came in pretty early (Turn 2 or 3) and dropped off some troopers to deal with my Obliterators. Obliterators are pretty awesome in a long range fight, but they’re not great in a hand-to-hand fight, unfortunately. It looked as if it might be a big mess over on that side of the board.

My Daemon Prince dropped in on Karl’s side of the board and was going to try to destroy Karl’s big Manticore missile launcher platform, but he was soon presented with some new targets: a squad of five Imperial Guard with melta guns and a big squad of 20 troopers with a wide assortment of weapons, and they were all Outflanking on the opposite side of the board from the fight between the Valkyrie and my Obliterators. Seeing this threat caused me to forget the Manticore and start going after some of the squishier targets with the dangerous guns. The squad of five guys with meltas fell really quickly to my Daemon Prince, but then the DP was left standing alone on the battlefield with 20 troopers (and their weapons) standing on a rock, all focused in on him. Needless to say, he didn’t survive another round and died in a hail of gunfire, but at least he did something.

Back on the other side of the board, the Valkyrie has been shot down and the troopers who had disembarked before the crash were heading towards the Obliterators. Uncle Tickles was coming to try and help out, but he was a bit far away and it was going to take him some time. Unfortunately, it was sometime around now when Karl’s ace in the hole, Guardsman Marbo came in from reserves. He can come in anywhere on the board and when he arrives, he can lob a suitcase full of explosives at a target and frequently kills a whole bunch of guys all at once, and he was targeting the Obliterators. However, this time he threw the suitcase wide and didn’t kill anybody. Since he really only has the one suitcase (I assume they’re heavy) he really couldn’t do much after that, and died in a hail of gunfire shortly thereafter.

The rest of the fight is mostly a blur, to be honest. I know I brought in my Chaos terminators via Deep Strike and they landed pretty close to where I wanted them (which was near Karl’s big Leman Russ tank) but then they failed to do their job (which was to destroy Karl’s big Leman Russ tank) as usual. At some point, Karl realized that he didn’t have any actual troops on his objective. Luckily, he had an extra airplane flying around and moved it over to pick up a group of scoring troops that weren’t doing too much where they were. They hopped in the airplane and headed towards Karl’s home objective. I really wanted to shoot Karl’s airplane down so his troops couldn’t get to his objective by the end of the game (thereby giving me the win) but Dreadnought Zoidberg got destroyed so I had no chance to stop Karl’s airplane.

The game ended up as a draw, as Karl’s jet-setters made it to his objective by the end of the game, and my Plague Marines had held my objective all game long (as they do) so neither of us had the advantage. Frankly, I’ll take a draw over a loss any day, so it was fine by me. I had a good time and got to go up against an army I don’t get to play against too frequently, and Karl got to use an army list that he doesn’t usually run (with all of the outflanking) too frequently, and we both got to hang out together and game, so the day overall was a win for us both, I suspect.

Hopefully, next time I play against Karl I’ll take better notes so my dear readers can get a little more ‘play-by-play’ action. We shall see.

Battles and Basecoats

I was recently invited to a Warhammer 40k gaming day at a friend of a friend’s house. I was told to bring a 400-point Combat Patrol list and a 1000-point list. Upon the completion of my daemon prince model and the near-completion of my dreadnought, I finally had enough figures to actually build a 1000-point list. It was pretty exciting.

We played up in Appleton at Zach’s house. I had never been there before, but he was really friendly and I knew all the other guys there, so it was great. I ended up getting into a game with Kelly and Karl. Kelly had 1000-points of Blood Angels and I had my 1000-points of Chaos Space Marines. We teamed up and played against Karl and his 2000-point Imperial Guard list. He had tanks and airplanes and wildebeests and the circa-1980s G.I. Joe aircraft carrier and a magical man named Marbo who killed an entire squad of Plague Marines (except one lone guy) with a single shot. No armor save. No Feel No Pain. Nothing.  It was kinda harsh.

However, we actually won the game, but only because the game ended on turn five (in many Warhammer 40k scenarios, you roll a D6 on turn five to see if the game ends, then you try an easier roll on turn six, and if the game is still going it must end at the end of turn seven) so that helped us out. I have no doubt in my mind that if the game had gone to turn six, the forces that Kelly and I still had left would have needed to be cleaned off the board with club soda.

I’m saying we would have left nothing behind but a stain. Not even a big one.

But it was a lot of fun and I look forward to doing it again and look forward to when I can host a game day like that in the Nerd Bunker. Things are progressing on that front.

Also progressing is the painting of my Chaos Space Marine forces. After figuring out how I would be basing them and doing some tests towards that end, I then based five of my normal CSM troopers and primed them black. They will be painted as Black Legion, so they’ll be mostly black and gold and a bit of silver. However, you never actually paint a black thing just straight ‘black’ in miniatures painting. Instead, you paint it a very dark grey. This allows you to darken parts of the model to add ‘shadow’ to the ‘black’ parts of the model. If you just primed the figure black, then you couldn’t make it any blacker, technically. Therefore, to trick the eye and give these small models more depth, you paint a ‘black’ model nearly black.

I realized that the primer I love to use (Duplicolor Sandable Primer) comes in black and also dark grey. Therefore, if I primed in black, and then oversprayed at a 45-degree angle with the dark grey, I would get both a nice middle zone and highlight zone of the dark grey color, and the shadow zones would stay primer black because the dark grey paint wouldn’t hit those areas. Don’t worry if this doesn’t make sense; if these first five models work out well, then I’ll probably make a step-by-step tutorial on this technique later on, with diagrams and whatnot. All that’s important at this point is that I got five models basecoated and I was happy with the results. Now, it’s time to move on to the next steps as soon as I figure out what they are.
