Switching Armies?

It’s been a long time since I posted here for real (the WordPress auto-generated “end of 2012” statistic post doesn’t count) and I want to mention exactly why that is, but it’ll have to wait for another post. Soon.

However, I did want to mention some stuff about my recent hobbying, so I figure here’s a good place to do it. Though I’ve been building pretty steadily since my last post, I haven’t actually played a game since mid-December. In that game, Kevin’s Eldar crushed my sad, stupid Chaos Space Marines, and made me take a long hard look at my new codex.

Then the new Dark Angels codex came out.

At this time, I’m putting my Chaos army on the shelf. I may sell them, but I haven’t decided yet. I think Games Workshop did a real disservice to the Chaos codex, especially when comparing it to the codex that they published before it (Necrons) and the codex after (Dark Angels). I could get into a long discussion about it and mention stats and force org comparisons and whatnot, but I don’t feel like it at this time. There are plenty of threads at Dakka Dakka and Warseer and other message boards that go over these issues in exhaustive detail, but let me just say that those bits of information are only part of the issue, and the other part of it is highly intangible and emotion-based. I can’t really describe it more than that, and due to this I’ve decided to put them on the shelf (for now) and not just sell the army outright on eBay or Bartertown.

So as it stands, I’m going back to my Black Templars and the allies that I’ve chosen for them, being at this time the Grey Knights and the Ultramarines. I have a game tonight against Kevin’s same Eldar list and tomorrow night I have a game against Jason’s Dark Eldar list. And though I doubt I’ll win either (as they’re both better players than me) I will probably at least feel better about my army, and for whatever reason, that’s pretty important to me.

More Building Progress and the Apocalypse

Due to the holidays and work and a few other things, I’ve been a bit slow on my posts here. But I have been working on the hobby and trying new things, so I got that going for me, which is nice.

I’ve been building new stuff for my Chaos Space Marine army. Although there are many actual models released for the line (including some new units released in the new book) there are anyways still units in the book that there are no actual models for. Case in point: the Nurgle Chaos Lord on Bike with Lightning Claw and Power Axe. Try and find a model for it on the website; it’s not there. I’ve looked. So I’m making my own.

So he sits on a Chaos Bike (‘natch) and his torso/head combination is a Forge World Death Guard piece. His lightning claw is from the new Chaos Space Marine Raptor/Warp Talon kit (the first time there have ever been Chaos lightning claws for sale) and his power axe is actually from a Beastman kit in the Warhammer Fantasy line. I made sure to magnetize the two arms so they could be swapped in with other arms when needed. I added some Green Stuff and modeled it to look Nurgle-y, which was fun. He needs a little more work (with some Liquid Green Stuff and maybe a trophy or some spikes, and then some basing) and then he’ll be ready for priming and paint.

And even though there are plenty of models for new units in the codex, sometimes I just don’t like those models and end up building my own. In this case, it’s the new Dark Apostle. He’s like an evil chaplain, and the new model is cool, but he’s made in Games Workshop’s Finecast resin instead of their excellent injection-molded plastic. He had a lot of small pieces and fine parts, and models like that in Finecast always make me nervous. As I’ve said in the past, if he was a Nurgle unit, I’d be fine with using Finecast, as bubbles and imperfections are part of the look, but in other units I’m leery. So again, I made my own.

The robed legs are from the Dark Angels upgrade sprue, the torso is from the Possessed troops, the head is from the Berzerkers kit, the staff is the icon holder’s pole from the regular CSM troop sprues with the standard Chaos icon on top, and the scrolls and books are mainly all from the Grey Knights. I’m going to paint the scrolls and books to look like they were holy Imperial texts and then I will blaspheme them with Chaos icons and such. I’m going to try to put extra effort into this figure when it comes time to paint, and may even attempt a bit of freehand. We’ll see how it goes, but I’m pretty happy with the modeling so far.

Lastly, I played in my first Apocalypse game at Fire For Effect Games a few weeks ago. I brought about 2200 points of Chaos Space Marines and we had me and five other players on the “bad guys” side. We were up against six players on the Imperial side, including a pretty cool Titan model made out of paper.

It was cool to see, but it was a little too much for me. I seem to like smaller games and will probably stick to 1 vs. 1 or maybe 2 vs. 2 in the future. That being said, we did win, however. Suck it, Corpse God!

Issues With the New Chaos Space Marine Codex and a New F(r)iend

So I’ve been pretty busy lately with the release of a new codex for my beloved Chaos Space Marines. I’ve been going through it over and over again, and I’m still up in the air with it. I’m not selling my figures and rage-quitting the codex, but there are some definite things I would have liked to see working differently than they are in the new book.

The main things: I really preferred the old daemon weapons that Chaos Lords could have back in the old book. They were just more variable, more interesting and they had more options, both for gameplay and for modeling. I also think the new Daemon Princes are too expensive for what you get, especially when they don’t get Eternal Warrior. I’m also bummed by cult troops (Plague Marines, Khorne Berzerkers, Thousand Sons and Noise Marines) being Elite choices unless you unlock them as Troops with the proper HQ choice. It’s kind of forcing you into making a mono-list (all Nurgle or all Slaanesh, etc.) and not really giving you a bonus for doing so. All in all, I’ll have to figure out what the best situation for me is going to be.

Towards that end, I’ve played three games with the new codex rules. I played a 1000-point game against John’s Crimson Fists using Space Wolves (aka Space Fists) a few weeks ago. That game I won, though it really seemed like I wouldn’t, early on. I got many lucky rolls with my Mark of Nurgle Terminators (they just wouldn’t die) and one of my Aspiring Champions turned into a Daemon Prince at one point (he never did anything cool, but he soaked an entire round of shooting from John before he finally shuffled off this mortal coil, thereby protecting the rest of my army from a full turn of gunfire) and I played the objectives well, so I pulled it out. Almost immediately after that game, I played an 1850-point game against Mike and his mostly all Space Marine bike list. I lost a lot of figures, but neither of us were able to score an objective properly, and neither of us was able to kill the other’s warlord, and we were both in each other’s deployment zone, so we were tied on primary and secondary points. Except: I had destroyed one of his units early on in the game, therefore I got the “First Blood” secondary objective, giving me a one point advantage, and allowing me to squeak out a victory. Barely.

Then, a week or two later, I played Kevin and his dreaded all-Terminator Deathwing army. My winning streak didn’t hold up.

Long story short: my list could not properly deal with a million Terminators (mostly all with Storm Shields and Cyclone Missile Launchers) Deepstriking “all up in my business” and taking all of my objectives. I know I did make some tactical mistakes in this battle, and there’s also the variable of the dice to contend with, but the Deathwing are just real bonecrushers, no matter what, and this new codex has very little to contend with them. I’ll have to work harder and try to figure out what my best bet will be, as Deathwing is the only army that Kevin has currently. He is working on a new Eldar army, but I’ve had bad luck with them (sometimes) in the past, too. I’ll need to up my game.

In hobby news, I (mostly) finished building my new Forgefiend model. I say mostly because he still needs more work done to his base (maybe a dead guy half-buried in ash, or maybe even a skeleton) and he only has one set of weapons magnetized. I will probably magnetize the other set of guns (the two Ectoplasma Cannons) later, as I’d rather run the Hades Autocannons (seen in the photo) in most situations. Also, I’m out of magnets, but have a shipment coming in next week, so that won’t be a problem for long.

I have a few other built models to show you, and I’ll have more soon, but this is enough for today. Better to spread it out so you don’t get bored with all of my productivity all at once.

Painting Chaos Cultists: Quick and Easy, Part One

So, like many 40k nerds out there, I purchased a copy of the Dark Vengeance Warhammer 40,000 Starter Box, which includes a bunch of Dark Angels (neat looking, but not my thing) and a bunch of Chaos Space Marines (one of my armies) as did my friend Karl (who plays Dark Angels) and then we traded the half of the boxes that we weren’t going to use. Therefore, I ended up with doubles of everything Chaos-related in the Dark Vengeance box. As it relates to this post, that means I have 40 Chaos Cultists to paint.

Chaos Cultists are a new unit to the newest version of the Chaos Space Marine codex, and they are, for all intents and purposes, cannon fodder. However, they’re cheap cannon fodder (in game points) and they can hold and score objectives, so I figured it would be good to include them in my army. I built them all (they mainly just snap together one way, so they were a quick build) and cleaned off the minimal mold lines and then textured their bases. Once they were all prepared, it was time to prime and basecoat them. I usually prime and basecoat with my airbrush these days, but since there are so many of these guys, I wanted to use a technique that would work through these guys pretty quickly. So I grabbed my bag of spraycans and went outside.

I used three main primer colors: Duplicolor Auto Red Oxide, Krylon Camo Brown, Krylon Camo Green, and Krylon Camo Black. All of these colors are great one-two punches for getting models both primed and basecoated all in one step. Rather than priming a model black, and then painting the basecoat brown or dark green or dark red, with these cans you can prime and basecoat in one step, which saves time.

As usual, don’t spray it on too thick, but make sure to get even coverage. I kind of split up my figures and tried to make sure that none of the specific poses would get the same base colors, therefore making the group look more like a chaotic group of rabble. I’ll work even more in the future steps to make two figures of the same sculpt look different from each other.

After they’ve dried a bit (maybe 5-10 minutes, depending on humidity) then it’s best to lay them on their fronts and then prime again, to make sure to get paint on the undersides of the figures. Then, after another 5-10 minutes, flip them over and get the other side’s underside areas. Now you’ll have a completely primed model.

Now, it’s time to add that special something, and even differentiate the paint jobs a bit more. Get out your other paintcans and dust the models from above.

If you dust the models with a lighter version of the base color from above, then they look as if you added in a built-in blended shadow to your paintjob, and they’ll look nicer and they’ll seem to look like you spent more time on them. If you dust the models with a lighter version of a different color from above, then it looks as if the model is being hit from above with a colored light, or it can add some discord to the look of the model, which is totally acceptable when painting nearly anything from Chaos, in my opinion. Therefore, I dusted some of the dark brown models with a tan (Krylon Camo Khaki), whereas others I dusted with grey or even red. The dark green models were either dusted with a light green for a natural look or tan for a touch of visual discord. And lastly, priming in black and then dusting with nearly any other color usually looks pretty good, I think.

So with all 40 figures primed, basecoated and even shadow-blended, I’m now pretty far ahead for having a big force of tabletop-quality cultists with not much work. Next time I touch on this topic, I’ll show you where you can go from here.

Versus the Tau Empire

I played against Josh and his Tau down in the Nerd Bunker. Tau was my very first army when I first started playing Warhammer 40k. I built and painted a bunch of them (mainly Firewarriors and Kroot) and then discovered that though they might build and paint pretty quickly, I wanted more modeling opportunities and general bitz and customization. This caused me to switch over to Chaos Space Marines (which put spikes and skulls on everything) and I haven’t really looked back. However, I still remember much of the Tau codex, so I may have been more familiar with this opposing force than any other that I’ve fought in the Nerd Bunker.

At this point, I don’t remember what the mission or the deployment was. As it turns out, this game was played back in April (just after Adepticon) and my notes are limited and I only seem to have three photos. I apologize in advance for a bit of a light batrep.

I won first turn. I moved up my troops that were on the table (I had reserved my Daemon Prince, Uncle Tickles, my three Stupid Terminators, and my three Obliterators because I didn’t want them to start out on the table due to his superior shooting) and tried firing my Vindicators, which were out of range, as usual. I just didn’t get much done. Josh, on the other hand, wrecked one of my Vindicators by using his Markerlights (kind of like laser targeting) and used his big Hammerhead tank to wreck the other one. Then he wrecked the Rhino full of Berzerkers with missile pods. For those of you scoring at home: I didn’t even hit stuff on my first turn, and the Tau wrecked two of my tanks and one of my personnel carriers on the first turn. It was looking grim on the first turn, which is always good.

On the second turn, my Daemon Prince and Stupid Terminators Deepstruck in to Josh’s back lines. Unfortunately, they didn’t do much once they got there. The Daemon Prince only put a wound on a single Tau Battlesuit and the Stupid Terminators dropped in front of Josh’s Broadsides (fancy battlesuits with twin-linked rail guns) and all three tried to fire their one-shot combi-meltas into them, hopefully taking them out. Of course, the Stupid Terminators completely flubbed this attack, wasting their combi-meltas and not doing anything but waiting to die in Josh’s turn, which is exactly what they did. Luckily, my Chaos Dreadnought (Zoidberg) hit one of Josh’s Hammerhead tanks and caused it to become Shaken, so it couldn’t fire for a turn. Unluckily, Josh’s Firewarriors unloaded a ton of fire (probably why they call them Firewarriors) into the Daemon Prince and he couldn’t make saves to save his life (literally) and he died. Josh killed some of my regular Chaos Space Marine troopers with some random fire and then turn two finally ended.

In turn three, my Obliterators and Uncle Tickles (my Chaos Lord in the Terminator armor, the dual Lightning Claws and the winning personality) finally showed up to the party, and tried to get to work. While they were strolling onto the board, my CSM troops wasted some shots on Josh’s Broadsides and again did nothing. He was masterful at making 4+ cover saves on this day. Luckily for me, his luck didn’t hold out forever, and the Obliterators (with their long-range weaponry) finally popped one of his regular Battlesuits, and caused the other one to break and run off the board. I finally had a killpoint! However, Josh had five, and was about to get more. On Josh’s turn, Uncle Tickles died in a hail off gunfire from a bunch of Battlesuits and some of the Firewarriors. The evil Broadsides shot up a few more of my CSM troops, but they didn’t break. Josh’s Kroot also tried to shoot up the CSM guys, but they lived through it. Lastly, the non-Shaken Hammerhead aimed his big, scary railgun at poor old Zoidberg, but he luckily missed.

On my turn 4, my Plague Marines were able to Immobilize one of Josh’s Devilfish transports with their plasmaguns. Zoidberg shot back at the Hammerhead that fired at him last turn, and destroyed the railgun on it, effectively neutering it. The Obliterators all flubbed their shots at the Hammerhead and were awarded no points. The Chaos Space Marine troops completely screwed up their assault against the Kroot and at the end, the last figure in the unit (the Aspiring Champion) decided to give up his aspirations of being a Champion and run away like a little girl. Luckily, I did get a bit of work done in this turn: my mob of Khorne Berzerkers brutally charged a pair of Tau Gun Drones and the poor drones couldn’t make their saves against 25 wounds and they died. Sure, it was overkill, but at this point I had to take what I could get.

On Josh’s turn four, his Kroot laughed at my cowardly “Aspiring” Champion as he aspired to run off the board and shot at him as he ran, but they didn’t kill him. Josh’s remaining Battlesuits ganged up on my beloved Obliterators and killed one, leaving two. His Hammerhead and this other Devilfish killed off half of my unit of Berzerkers, who were still high off of their triumph over the two measly Gun Drones. Things were winding down.

Here’s all I have written down in my notes for my turn five: “Nothing. No shots landed.” So things weren’t looking good for me. On Josh’s turn five, his Battlesuit Command Squad killed off my last two Obliterators, leaving me with very little left.

Either we rolled to end the game at the end of turn five or we just called it, I’m not sure anymore and my notes became nothing but swear-words and something about “commie fish-cows” or something. Some people like to say that the Tau are an underpowered army and that is frequently true in close combat. However, their guns are some of the best in the game, as I rediscovered in this particular battle.

I took these photos of my finished Chaos Space Marines quite some time ago, but they’ve been sitting on my hard drive, unedited, ever since. I’m not sure what took me so long, but it’s probably one of those “out of sight, out of mind” issues. The photos were in a folder and I nearly forgot about them.

As you can see, I went with a Black Legion paint scheme. I worked hard to make the black not too black, yet also not grey. I also wanted the black to be a “warm” black, instead of a “cool” black. A quick rundown of my process: I prime them black, then dust them from above with a layer of medium grey. This builds in some highlights and shadows. Then I drybrush Codex Grey on the upper bits to add even more highlights.

I then put a GW Devlan Mud wash over the whole model to darken up the armor, and it also adds a “warmish” cast to the dark areas. This warmer cast mixes quite well with the gold trim and the bone-colored horns and whatnot. The trim on the legs is mainly all GW Bolt Gun Metal, which is a dark silver metallic.

The metallics are all washed with either Devlan Mud (mainly for the gold) or Badab Black (for the silver trim on the legs and the silver on the weapons) and then highlighted with the same color again after the wash dries. I’m still a pretty slow painter, so it takes me a long time, but I’m pretty happy with the results.

I finish up with the same basing technique that I’ve used all throughout this army project. It ends up being a bit of a “cooler” grey ash effect with some jagged rocks thrown in for good measure. These guys have served me well since September 2011, when I actually got them finished in time for a Combat Patrol tournament. It was mainly my own forgetfulness that has kept these finished photos off of the blog until now. Unfortunately, I’m in a bit of a holding pattern on painting my Chaos Space Marine army right now, because the new edition of Warhammer 40,000 will be coming out in early July, and a new codex book for my army should be coming pretty soon after that. The issue is that I don’t know if they’re going to disband any of the units I currently use or add crazy-useful new ones or what. Therefore, I pretty much wait. And play games. And build more terrain.

Versus Blood Angels

Ben and I got together a while back and played a 1750-point game in the Nerd Bunker. He brought his Blood Angels (very nicely painted, by the way) and I brought my Chaos Space Marines as usual. We rolled up the mission type (three objectives) and the deployment (Spearhead) and got started. I only have vague notes on this game (I’ve started taking much better notes since this battle) so my recollection is going to be flawed at best. Hopefully you’ll be able to get something out of it other than just the pictures and my rapier wit. Frankly, I learned a lot during this game.

He reserved everything, which is something that I never think to do, I guess. I only reserved a few things (my stupid Terminators and the good ol’ Deamon Prince who really needs a name) and deployed my guys in the corner and started moving them towards the middle objective, as I already had my trusty Plague Marines dug in and holding the objective in my corner.

Early on, my stupid Terminators came in from reserve via Deepstrike, and as usual, they scattered badly and I had to roll on the Deepstrike Mishap chart. This time, they only landed in error, which meant that Ben got to put them wherever he wanted instead of where I wanted. He put them all the way in the back of my deployment area as far away from the action as possible, thinking he was very clever.

His stuff started coming in from reserves and rolling in from his deployment area. His Baal Predator was outflanking, and due to the random roll it came in way down by my side of the board and very, very near my stupid Terminators’ threat range. Ha! They did get to shoot it up, but it never did explode or even wreck during the entire game. Again, the stupid Terminators failed me for the last time. Until the next time.

Things got weird and ugly over here for awhile

The Predator did end up either taking out my Vindicator on that side or helping to take it out. Either way, wrecked Vindicator. I’m not having too much luck with those things, either. Sometimes I get them to do a little bit of damage, and then they die. Other times, I get them to do no damage, and then they die.

Soon, Ben’s Dante & Friends squad deepstruck in (I believe they get to come in wherever they want on the board with no scatter) and went to work on my second Vindicator from behind. He also brought in his Stormraven from reserves, and it dumped off his Death Company and his “Cheater Dreadnought” which has a real name, but everyone I know (both offline and online) usually refers to it as a Cheater Dreadnought. Therefore, I have no idea what it’s really called. Do a Google search if you want. These things all got dropped off near the center objective, which I was hoping to take with my Berzerkers and good old Uncle Tickles.

Uncle Tickles says, “Is that Stormraven coming this way? My goodness, look at the time – I must be going!”

At some point my Obliterators finally immobilized Ben’s Predator and destroyed all its weapons, so it just sat there sadly the rest of the game and sulked. The Stormraven gunned down most of my Berzerkers that were trying to hold the center objective, so the remaining few and Uncle Tickles decided it would be better to run straight into combat with Ben’s Death Company unit than to sit through another volley of the Stormraven’s withering fire (because you can’t fire at a unit that’s in hand-to-hand combat with one of your other units; therefore the Berzerkers would be “safe”), so headlong into combat they went. The Berzerkers didn’t make it, but Uncle Tickles cleaned up the mess and eventually wiped out the Death Company unit himself after several turns.

Ben’s Cheater Dreadnought, after completely chewing through an entire squad of Chaos Space Marines in one turn without even a thought, was thwarted from causing any more problems for me at the center objective quite simply: I parked an empty Rhino in a spot where he’d either have to spend at least one turn trying to destroy it or take the long way around just to get where he wanted to go, and since it was later in the game, the Cheater was kinda nullified. This just taught me again the importance of using your terrain and looking at certain units as mobile cover, bubblewrap or even as simple speedbumps. An empty Rhino with no guns on it can still be useful.

At some point, after destroying my second Vindicator, Dante and Friends got into a slapfight with my Chaos Dreadnought, Zoidberg. Dante couldn’t seem to do enough hand-to-hand damage to take out Zoidberg, and Zoidberg didn’t have a standard dreadnought close-combat weapon to crush foes with (since he’s all about the long range with the twin-linked lascannon and the missile launcher) so it was a stalemate for quite some time. Finally, Dante prevailed and destroyed Zoidberg, and then Ben realized something: Dante has Hit and Run, which would have allowed him to break from combat at any time and fry Zoidberg from a distance. This just reinforces the idea that you really need to know your army list.

Towards the end, Ben tried sending Dante (fresh off of his slapfight with Zoidberg) up towards the center objective and finally, my Daemon Prince (who had been doing nearly nothing this whole game due to a bad deepstrike landing and my dumbness) got into the game and started a fight with Dante, again annoying him and making him late for an appointment. Since Ben didn’t figure he’d be taking the center objective with Dante, he thought his best bet at this time was to try to get my Plague Marines off of my objective, since his snipers held his objective and I had nothing in that neighborhood to give them any trouble. This would allow him to win 1-0, if successful. To try to clear the pesky Plague Marines off of holding my objective, he brought in his Stormraven and did an alpha-strike on my unit of sticky troopers, firing everything he had all at once. After the smoke cleared, I think he had killed one of eight. Maybe two. They are very resilient, I’ll admit, but it would have been a very different outcome if any of the four BloodStrike missiles he fired would have actually hit their targets. Luck seemed to be on my side at the very end of the game and we scored it as a draw, one objective to one.

As I said, I learned a lot and had a good time. I see more and more why it’s not only a good idea to read your own codex, but keep yourself up to date on the other codex rules as well. The Cheater Dreadnought is still pretty damn gross, and your best bet is to try and block it in with vehicles and see if you can shoot it to death. And lastly, I learned that I have to paint my damn Vindicators if I want them to actually start working.
